Fungicide Group PA-Fungicides: A Key to Managing Oomycetes Pathogens

26 February 2025, New Delhi: PA-Fungicides, commonly known as phenylamides, are a group of fungicides widely used for managing diseases caused by Oomycetes pathogens. These fungicides target the RNA polymerase I enzyme, a crucial component in the pathogen’s ability to reproduce. By inhibiting RNA synthesis, phenylamides prevent the growth and spread of fungal diseases.

However, the resistance of various Oomycetes pathogens to phenylamides is well-documented. While the exact mechanism of resistance remains unclear, the ongoing use of phenylamides has led to the evolution of resistant strains. This makes resistance management strategies such as rotating fungicide classes and applying fungicides based on careful monitoring essential for effective disease control.

Farmers must be vigilant about using phenylamides alongside other fungicides with different modes of action to maintain the long-term efficacy of this group. Resistance management is critical, as overuse can severely reduce the ability of phenylamides to manage crop diseases.
