FMC India’s Perspective on World Water Day: Addressing Water Challenges in Agriculture
21 March 2025, New Delhi: As World Water Day approaches, the focus on sustainable water management and conservation intensifies, especially in the agriculture sector. In India, agriculture consumes over 80% of the country’s freshwater resources, with water-intensive crops like rice, wheat, and sugarcane posing significant challenges in a time of depleting groundwater levels and erratic climate patterns.
Speaking on the importance of sustainable water use, Mr. Raju Kapoor, Director of Industry & Public Affairs at FMC India, emphasized the critical need for innovative solutions to optimize water usage while maintaining agricultural productivity. He noted, “Ensuring efficient water use is no longer an option—it is a necessity. Farmers need access to innovative solutions that help them optimize water usage while maintaining high yields. Precision agriculture, advanced irrigation techniques, and science-driven crop protection methods can significantly reduce water wastage and enhance soil moisture retention.”
FMC India, a part of the global agricultural sciences company FMC Corporation, is committed to aiding farmers in adopting sustainable farming practices. Mr. Kapoor revealed that FMC will soon introduce a global discovery solution for weed management in Direct Seeded Rice (DSR), a method known for its potential to conserve water. This initiative aligns with FMC’s aim to combine modern technology with traditional agricultural knowledge to help farmers build climate-resilient farms.
“Water is the foundation of life and agriculture. As stakeholders in this ecosystem, we must take decisive steps to promote water stewardship and sustainable farming practices. By working together, we can ensure that every drop of water is used efficiently, securing a more resilient and productive future for Indian agriculture,” Mr. Kapoor added.
