Bayer Confident in China’s Agricultural Future, Eyes Sustainability and Innovation
01 January 2025, China: Bayer Crop Science, a division of Germany’s Bayer AG, has expressed strong confidence in the future of China’s agricultural sector, citing the country’s robust economy, technological advancements, and commitment to sustainable farming as key drivers of growth.
During the seventh China International Import Expo held in Shanghai, Bayer showcased its regenerative agriculture products, reflecting its focus on innovation and sustainability. Natasha Santos, Bayer Crop Science’s Vice-President and Head of Sustainability and Strategic Engagement, emphasized China’s importance as a strategic market for the company.
“I remain highly optimistic about China’s economic trajectory and the immense potential of its agricultural sector,” Santos remarked. “China is more than just a market for Bayer—it’s a strategic partner in advancing sustainable agricultural practices, fostering digital transformation, and driving innovation.”
Focus on Sustainability and Regenerative Agriculture
Santos highlighted China’s dedication to sustainable agriculture as a critical area of opportunity for Bayer. As the nation prioritizes environmentally friendly farming practices, Bayer is keen to expand its work in regenerative agriculture, biological solutions, and advanced crop protection methods.
“The government’s focus on rural development and low-carbon initiatives is paving the way for promising advancements in agriculture,” Santos added. “This aligns perfectly with Bayer’s mission to enhance productivity while safeguarding the environment.”
China’s agricultural sector has been increasingly emphasizing reducing chemical pesticide use, conserving water, and promoting biodiversity. These goals resonate with Bayer’s efforts to provide cutting-edge solutions to support local farmers in achieving both higher yields and environmental conservation.
Supporting Smallholder Farmers
A cornerstone of Bayer’s strategy in China is its support for smallholder farmers (SHFs), who play a vital role in the country’s agricultural output despite the growing trend toward large-scale farming. Through partnerships with local stakeholders, Bayer aims to provide financial and technical assistance to enhance the livelihoods and incomes of these farmers.
“Empowering smallholder farmers is central to Bayer’s approach in China,” Santos said. “We aim to equip them with tools, knowledge, and resources to succeed in a rapidly evolving agricultural landscape.”
Leveraging Digitalization for Growth
China’s leadership in digital innovation presents another growth avenue for Bayer. The company has integrated digital tools into its operations to enhance agricultural efficiency and better serve farmers. Platforms like Drone Plus, which offers one-stop drone services, are prime examples of Bayer’s commitment to leveraging technology for improved farming outcomes.
“Digital tools are transforming agriculture, helping farmers achieve greater productivity and efficiency,” Santos noted. “We see tremendous potential in this area and are excited to continue exploring these opportunities.”
Investment in Innovation and Expansion
Bayer is making significant investments in China’s agricultural sector to support innovation and growth. The company recently announced a €40 million investment in a new supply center in Zhejiang province to meet the rising demand for advanced crop protection products in China and the Asia-Pacific region. Furthermore, Bayer has upgraded its innovation hub in Jiangsu province, equipping it with state-of-the-art greenhouses to bolster research efforts and drive digital and innovation-led growth.
Santos also underscored Bayer’s alignment with China’s push for technological innovation and industrial upgrading. “China’s focus on fostering new productive forces aligns seamlessly with Bayer’s strategic vision,” she said. “These reforms provide an excellent platform for us to expand our investments in supply chains, advanced agricultural technologies, and R&D.”
