ADAMA Unveils Gilboa: A Breakthrough in Crop Protection

06 December 2024, EU: ADAMA Ltd. (SZSE 000553), a global leader in crop protection, has announced the development of Gilboa, an innovative fungicidal active ingredient designed to combat critical diseases in cereals and oilseed rape, including Septoria, Ramularia, and Sclerotinia. This groundbreaking molecule, submitted to the Fungicide Resistance Action Committee (FRAC), is anticipated to be assigned to a new mode of action group, marking a significant advancement in resistance management for European farmers.

Gilboa: Addressing Resistance and Evolving Needs

In recent years, European farmers have faced increasing challenges, losing access to 68 conventional pesticide active ingredients due to regulatory changes. Compounding this is the lack of new molecules targeting key diseases like Septoria in wheat, Ramularia in barley, and Sclerotinia in oilseed rape. Unlike existing solutions, predominantly based on SDHI and DMI chemistries, Gilboa targets a novel pathway, providing farmers with a transformative tool to manage resistance and improve crop health.

“Based on extensive field trials, Gilboa represents a game-changer for cereal farmers in Great Britain, Europe, and beyond,” said Florian Wagner, EVP Portfolio and Innovation at ADAMA. “This novel chemistry underscores ADAMA’s commitment to advancing crop protection solutions that safeguard cereal crops while mitigating resistance risks.”

A New Era in Sustainable Agriculture

Gilboa is poised to complement ADAMA’s existing portfolio, offering a broader spectrum of solutions to address disease pressures effectively. “Farmers today need innovative, diverse tools,” noted Gaël Hili, President and CEO of ADAMA. “Gilboa delivers exactly that, enabling growers to adapt to evolving challenges and enhance disease management sustainably.”

Timelines and Impact

The molecule was submitted for registration in 2023 and is projected for approval in Great Britain by 2027 and the European Union by 2029, with further registrations planned for other regions. By offering an alternative to existing chemistries, Gilboa™ reaffirms ADAMA’s leadership in providing sustainable solutions tailored to the modern agricultural landscape.
