ICL’s Gemini Granular Herbicide Approved for Use in California

20 March 2025, California: ICL has received approval for its Gemini Granular Herbicide with R-50 Optimizer in California. This registration provides ornamental growers with a new option to control grass and broadleaf weeds.

According to Robbie Abillama, ICL Growing Solutions’ Western Region Sales Manager, the product uses 50% less active ingredient without reducing effectiveness. The R-50 Optimizer improves the release and distribution of the active ingredients, prodiamine and isoxaben. This adjustment allows for more active ingredient to move off the carrier when watered in, expanding the area of weed control.

Gemini Granular’s active ingredients are not new, but the combination in a granular form is new for California. Abillama noted that it offers growers another option for their pre-emergent herbicide rotation.

The product label provides three application rates — low, medium, and high — depending on weed pressure. At lower rates, it can control weeds for 60 to 90 days, while higher rates extend protection up to four months.

Keith Santner, ICL’s New Markets and Field Technical Service Manager for ornamental and turf, mentioned that the reduction in active ingredient allows for an extra application during the season if needed while remaining within legal limits.

Gemini Granular can be used with over 500 ornamental plants and targets more than 120 listed weeds, covering both grasses and broadleaf varieties. Abillama stated that the product can address a wide range of weed issues for California growers.

Matt Gladden, ICL’s Turf and Ornamental Marketing and Business Development Lead, noted that the company had been working on California approval for several years. He said that Gemini has been used in other regions and is now available to growers in California.
