Fertilizer Utilization in China’s Major Grain Crops Continues to Rise in 2024

20 January 2025, New Delhi: In 2024, the fertilizer utilization rate for China’s three major grain crops—rice, corn, and wheat—reached 42.6%, marking an increase of 1.3% from 41.3% in 2022. This steady upward trend highlights the growing efficiency in fertilizer use year after year.

The consistent improvement in fertilizer utilization is credited to robust efforts by agricultural authorities to implement fertilizer reduction strategies. Since 2015, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs has been leading a zero-growth initiative aimed at reducing the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. This initiative focuses on enhancing utilization efficiency through measures such as improving product quality, developing advanced and efficient products, and refining application methods. These efforts not only reduce dependency on chemical inputs but also support environmental sustainability and long-term agricultural productivity.

Among the various initiatives driving this progress, soil testing and customized fertilization stand out as key contributors. Across China, agricultural authorities and enterprises collaborate to provide tailored fertilizer solutions, ensuring the widespread adoption of formulated fertilization practices. Currently, more than 95% of rice, corn, and wheat crops are covered under these soil-testing programs, reflecting the program’s vast reach and effectiveness.

The integration of advanced fertilization technologies, innovative products, and modern machinery has also played a vital role. These advancements have been implemented across multiple regions, significantly boosting the overall fertilizer utilization rate.

In addition to technological innovations, alternative practices have further supported the reduction of chemical fertilizer use. Farmers are increasingly encouraged to use local manure, plant green manure, and adopt microbial fertilizers as partial substitutes for chemical fertilizers, fostering a more sustainable agricultural approach.

Professional fertilization services have been another critical factor in improving efficiency. Across the country, efforts are underway to expand access to specialized services, including precision fertilization guided by intelligent diagnostics, digital fertilizer distribution, and mechanized “one-stop” solutions. These services are designed to promote scientific and precise application methods.

Looking ahead, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs has emphasized the need for continued advancements in fertilization efficiency. The focus will remain on integrating advanced processes, technologies, and tools to further enhance fertilizer utilization in rice, corn, and wheat production.
