Far North Queensland Growers Still See Positive Results Amid Challenging Harvest

21 March 2025, AU: With mango harvest wrapping up and banana and avocado picking in full swing, horticulture producers across Far North Queensland are still seeing positive results following recent floods.

After a series of low-pressure systems brought persistent heavy rainfall across parts of Far North Queensland (FNQ) early this year, widespread flooding saw significant crop and farm infrastructure losses.

However, despite some difficulties with water logging and moving fruit to market, producers across FNQ have still seen strong production and supply across products such as avocadoes, mangoes, bananas and lychees.

“Premiums for avocadoes and mangoes have been particularly good with packouts reaching up to 94 per cent,” Nutrien Ag Solutions Mareeba agronomist James Geary said.

“The main issue with the wet was the inability to send fruit to market, growers had full cold rooms and had to negotiate local market opportunities to get fruit moving.

“Growers were also having some issues with pests due to limited spray windows but overall packouts have been good and premiums remained.”

The ABARES recent agricultural commodities report has forecasted horticulture production to rise by 4 per cent to $18.8 billion in 2025–26, driven by strong domestic production and favourable climate conditions.

As growers look to wrap up harvest over the coming weeks, Nutrien Ag Solutions Tolga agronomist Tegan Brownie said her clients are already looking towards pricing for next season.

“Mangoes, lemons and limes have recently wrapped up with an overall good quality harvest while avocado harvest and banana picking is underway,” Brownie said.

“Growers are now looking towards pricing for next season along with all the usual pre-season planning of nutrition and pesticides.

“There’s a lot of market confidence among FNQ growers in this industry at the moment and hopefully we see another strong season in the year ahead.”
