Farming Against the Elements: How APAC Growers Are Turning to Biostimulants in an Era of Climate Stress

15 April 2025, New Delhi: The Asia-Pacific region’s farmers stand at the frontline of climate disruption, confronting blistering heatwaves, destructive floods, and a steadily declining foundation of soil health. But even as the environmental challenges grow, so too does a powerful response—rooted in science, seaweed, and sustainability.

“The biostimulant industry in APAC is growing at a double-digit pace,” says Prashant Kharwadkar, Commercial Vice President at Acadian Plant Health (APH), a global leader in sustainable biostimulant solutions. “More and more growers are realizing the value of biostimulants as a vital tool to manage abiotic stress and ensure consistent crop yields.”

The pressure is undeniable. In recent years, rice cultivation has suffered from extreme heat across Japan, China, and Southeast Asia, while regions like India, South China, Australia, and Taiwan have battled torrential rains and waterlogging. Farmers are left searching for practical answers to a fundamental question: how can they protect yields and livelihoods when the weather won’t cooperate?

Part of the answer lies in the soil—and what we feed it.

“In many APAC countries, the overuse of synthetic fertilizers has deteriorated soil health,” Kharwadkar notes. “Governments are now prioritizing sustainable, regenerative agriculture practices—not just in developed nations, but across emerging economies too.”

This shift has accelerated demand for science-backed solutions that can work with nature, not against it. Acadian’s suite of biostimulants, based on the seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum, is designed to do just that. These biostimulants are helping crops become more resilient to extreme weather while enhancing nutrient uptake and soil structure.

“Our technology is focused on abiotic stress management and soil health,” Kharwadkar explains. “It’s a perfect fit for the needs of APAC growers, whether they’re fruit and vegetable producers or large-scale row crop cultivators.”

Backed by over 40 years of scientific research, Acadian’s products are more than just inputs—they’re part of a broader movement toward regenerative agriculture that’s gaining momentum in the region. For Kharwadkar and his team, that mission is personal.

“Using this data to help solve growers’ problems is an exciting space to work in,” he says. “It’s incredibly rewarding to be part of something that’s good for farmers, good for food security, and good for the planet.”

As the climate continues to shift, the APAC region’s agricultural landscape is transforming with it. With biostimulants offering a new kind of resilience—drawn from the sea and grounded in science—the future of farming may be rooted in something far more enduring than the next season’s weather.
