PHDCCI to Host National Round Table on Weed Management Policy to Strengthen Farmers’ Income and Food Security

09 April 2025, New Delhi: The PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) is set to organize a high-level Industry Round Table Meet on the theme “National Policy for Weed Management: Essential for Farmers’ Income and Food Security” on May 29, 2025, at PHD House, New Delhi. The event is being led by the Agribusiness Committee under the chairmanship of Dr. R. G. Agarwal, a prominent voice in the agri-input sector.

As India moves toward its centenary of independence in 2047, ensuring long-term food and feed security for a population expected to exceed 1.6 billion becomes a national imperative. Weeds, often overlooked in mainstream agricultural policy, are responsible for an alarming 18–26% crop loss annually across both kharif and rabi seasons. Despite this, weed management continues to receive limited attention in comparison to other aspects of crop protection and farm productivity.

The round table aims to bring together policymakers, industry experts, scientists, farmers’ representatives, and other stakeholders to deliberate on the urgent need for a comprehensive National Policy on Weed Management. Discussions will revolve around improving current weed control practices, promoting sustainable methods, and exploring policy interventions that can directly contribute to enhancing farm profitability, reducing production costs, and ensuring national food and nutritional security.

Speaking about the initiative, Ms. Mili Dubey, Assistant Secretary General, PHDCCI, said, “This platform is designed to encourage collaborative thinking and action. It is time we recognize the economic and agronomic impact of unmanaged weeds and address the issue with focused policy and research support.”
