Wide Variety of Views in Horticulture Sector About Use of Gene Technology

14 August 2024, New Delhi: There are a wide variety of views in the horticulture sector about the use of genetic technologies in areas such as precision plant breeding.

The Government has announced legislation ending the effective ban on gene technology outside the lab and, implementing a dedicated regulator to oversee applications to use gene technology will be introduced to Parliament by the end of the year.

“We acknowledge that a review of the legislation was necessary, and our focus is on gauging the views of growers,” says Michelle Sands, general manager strategy and policy at Horticulture New Zealand (HortNZ).

“Our industry is diverse and that is what makes this issue so important. We are committed to understanding the full spectrum of views of our growers. This will enable HortNZ to come to a considered position that reflects the views of as many growers as possible.”

HortNZ will make a submission on behalf of the horticulture industry when the government calls for public submissions.

“We encourage all growers to stay engaged and contribute their perspectives as the review unfolds. Every viewpoint is vital in shaping the future of our sector.”
