UPLB, KOICA, and IRRI Celebrate Completion of Main Structure of Advanced Genomics Research Center (AGRC)
10 May 2025, Philippines: The University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), in collaboration with the South Korean Government and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), marked a major milestone with the Topping-off Ceremony of the UPLB–Advanced Genomics Research Center (AGRC), signaling the completion of the facility’s main structure.
The UPLB–AGRC, funded through the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) project, will drive innovation in agriculture by advancing genomics and bioinformatics applications for crops, livestock, and other vital species. Envisioned as a state-of-the-art hub for genome-based research, the facility will, once completed, serve as a regional center for cutting-edge science that will encourage collaboration among scientists, researchers, and students to address critical agricultural challenges.
The ceremony celebrated this achievement and recognized the contributions of iSteel workers, encouraging continued safe construction as the project progresses.
Present at the event were key leaders including UPLB Chancellor Dr. Jose V. Camacho Jr., who delivered a congratulatory message. He was joined by Vice Chancellors Dr. Nathaniel Bantayan (Research and Extension), who delivered the welcome remarks, and Dr. Rossana Marie C. Amongo (Planning and Development). Other distinguished guests included Prof. Danilo J. Mercado, who led the blessing; Mr. Soonil Yi, KOICA Construction Manager; and Dr. Sankalp Bhosale, Interim Research Director of IRRI’s Rice Breeding Innovations Department, who led the ceremonial toast.
The UPLB–AGRC is a key component of a six-year collaboration with KOICA aimed at strengthening academic and research ties between UPLB and Korean institutions. As the project’s technical partner, IRRI provides expertise in the application of genomics tools in plant breeding, manages ten advanced agricultural science internship programs, and hosts research scholars at its global headquarters.
