Drylands cover 46% of the earth’s surface, support nearly 44% of global agricultural systems, and are home to around 3 billion people worldwide. To tackle the complex challenges facing global dryland communities – ranging from climate change and conflicts to outdated agricultural practices and population growth – CGIAR is launching its 2030 Global Strategy for Resilient Drylands (GSRD) that is set to revolutionize dryland agriculture and generate thriving and resilient livelihoods in dryland communities across the world.
The GSRD will:
- Highlight the importance to global stability of strengthening the livelihoods resilience of 38% of the global population who live in drylands
- Underscore the threats to dryland regions and how other global regions facing water scarcity are themselves under threat in the face of climate change
- Showcase CGIAR’s unique dryland agri-innovations, approaches, and bio-diversity, demonstrating their global relevance as climate change intensifies
- Present key facts, numbers, technologies, and innovations for developing climate-resilient food systems in dry areas.
The GSRD, co-led by ICARDA and ICRISAT, underscores the critical role of drylands in strengthening global stability and food production and offers dryland agri-technology and biodiversity relevant to other global regions facing future water scarcity and heat shocks.
