BNI – New Research Initiative in India to help reducing nitrogen in Wheat
18 October 2022, New Delhi: Deployment of BNI Technology (Biological nitrification inhibition) will help in establishment of Nitrogen-efficient wheat production systems in Indo-Gangetic region of India.
The gene transferred from wild grass to wheat lines is being utilized for improving the most popular wheat varieties DBW187, DBW303, DBW222 , HD3386, HD3369, HD3086.
BNI-wheat technology is seed-based and is easy to adopt. BNI-enabled wheats would require significantly less nitrogen fertilizer without impacting productivity, thus improve cost of wheat production.
BNI-trait improved wheat production and also protects ecosystems from nitrate leaching and N2O emissions.
